A simple favourite: Post-gym berry smoothie

Jump to Recipe

This smoothie is another simple favourite. It is protein-packed and made with 4 ingredients…. it’s a good one to have on the go!

Milk contains calcium, protein, vitamins such as D and B12 and potassium. These are important for bone and muscle health and contribute to a stronger, healthier body. Berries are rich in anti-oxidants which help to protect the body against chronic disease. They also have an anti-inflammatory effect and give your brain and heart a health-boost.

The addition of collagen is a slightly more expensive one, but one I love nonetheless. Collagen is one of the body’s main proteins, and helps to strengthen bones and cartilage. It als0 supports skin health (for all my skincare girlies out there) and is in essence… protein. This means that the addition of a couple of scoops results in a huge boost in protein for any strength-training recovery drink.

This, in combination with the protein powder, gives your muscles the building-blocks they need after a workout to facilitate growth and increased strength. I use Wazoogles protein powder, which serves as a plant-based source of protein. A fun fact of note is that the vitamin C from the berries enhances the uptake of non-heme (plant-derived) Iron.

This is a good tip to take into account if you eat a plant-based diet. Incorporating a source of vitamin C into meals where sources of protein and Iron are strictly from plants (such as legumes, spinach, tofu) can help you get the most out of these sources and aid in preventing Iron-deficiency.
