Sugar-free Chocolate Mug Cake
This 5 minute recipe is perfect to satisfy those chocolate cravings after a long day. I have been experimenting and perfecting this recipe for a while to create something easy to make and nutritious.
It uses only 6 ingredients zero refined sugar to create a chocolatey mug cake with a gooey peanut butter centre. While both honey and banana contain sugars such as fructose and glucose, they are present in their natural form. This has significant benefit for your blood sugar levels as opposed to using refined sugar.
Let me explain…..

I like to call honey “nature’s sweetener”. It is sweeter than sugar, which means it can produce the same amount of sweetness in the end product as sugar with smaller amounts. It also has a lower Glycemic Index (GI) as opposed to sugar, which means that it does not spike your body’s glucose levels as much when you eat it. This is especially beneficial for those that struggle with high blood sugar or conditions such as Diabetes.
Frequent and high spikes in blood sugar put strain on your body, which is desperately trying to regulate these levels and get them back to normal. Making sure that you eat lower GI foods can reduce the risk of high blood sugar and the resulting damage it could cause your nerves and blood vessels. Alongside this, utilising raw honey can be beneficial to your health in that it contains antioxidants and amino acids that are not present in refined sugar.

Bananas, like honey, have a lower Glycemic Index that sugar. They provide a fruity sweetness along with fibre, Vitamins C and B6, and Potassium. These micronutrients have many health benefits for your digestive system and heart. All in all, both these ingredients provide an energy boost that makes this snack a great pick-me-up before daily activities or a workout… or, just to treat yourself!
That being said, although these sugars are lower GI or wrapped up in fibre and micronutrients, they are still sugar and can still have negative effects when consumed in excess. They contain sucrose in a more organic form, but this is the same disaccharide (two-part sugar) found in granulated sugar.
So, as the saying goes, “everything in moderation”. But, when those sweet-tooth cravings hit, always opt for a fruit you enjoy rather than a chocolate bar 0ff the shelf when you can. This ensures you get all your daily micronutrients in, along with that energy boost to go out and have a productive day.
